Meta, formerly known as Facebook, tees up another data center in Gallatin

One of the world's 20 largest public companies is pushing its investment well beyond $1 billion in its data center site northeast of Nashville.

Meta Platforms Inc. (Nasdaq: META), formerly known as Facebook, is seeking approval from the city of Gallatin to build another data center on its 800-acre site — where 1.6 million square feet of data centers already are operational or under construction.

The Business Journal obtained the newly filed project plans in a records request. Meta filed its plans by a deadline that places it on track for a vote at the May 20 meeting of the Gallatin Municipal Planning Commission.

The construction will push Meta's investment in Gallatin well beyond the $1 billion mark since the company arrived in 2020. The data centers will support some of the company's 3.98 billion active monthly users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Meta is valued at more than $1.3 trillion on the stock market.

Meta's first set of Gallatin data centers are the legs of a building shaped like a capital H. Another second set of connected data centers, arranged like a backward four, are under construction on a road named Meta Loop.

Hundreds of construction workers are on site daily, and Meta will employ about 100 people full-time at the Gallatin site once the second pair of buildings is fully operational.

The company's newly filed project submittal shows a 278,000-square-foot data center, shaped like a stretched plus sign. That's a 17% increase to the company's existing data center footprint, raising that total space to almost 1.9 million square feet, including a bit of administrative office space.

A Meta spokesperson declined comment.

The city planning commission is set to hold a public work session involving the project on April 29. No votes will be taken at that meeting.

Meta's project team includes DPR Construction, Nashville's Barge Design Solutions and architect Burns McDonnell.
